THE STATE OF THE RACE :

In the following years the breed developed and spread in Portugal gaining breeders interest . But in the middle seventies due to internal social and political changes it was again at risk of extinction. Presently there are many breeders and fans interested in this breed and it is associated with many sporting activities. In 1968 a first puppy was imported in the USA, and the breed, though slowly, has begun to expand and get renown. In South America there are a few people deeply interested in the Portuguese Water Dog, but it is still to be considered a very rare breed. The same for Africa, with a few specimens present only in South Africa.

 

In Italy the first Câo de Agua was imported by Mr. Orselli in the middle of the 1970s. After this time only two breeders have shown interest in promoting the breed but without success. Breeding of Câo de Agua has really started again with the birth of my first litter bred in 1996 by the bitch Amor do Lusiadas, who came from Switzerland and was of direct descent from Portuguese Water Dogs, as was the sire from Austria , Jago Von Winikon. The affix Do Lusiadas was kindly given to me as a sign of friendship and bonding out of our common passion for dogs and breeding by its former owner Georg Kratochvil. In Europe the Câo de Agua is now present and begins to be appreciated as the breed really deserves in every country: Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Germany. Only in France the breed is still little known.

In Italy the race Cao de Agua is protected by the C.I.S. ( Spaniel Italian Club) that it occupies, on charge of the ENCI, together to the other races type exception of the Springer Spaniel. Some impassioned Italians however they are gathered in the month of March 2005 in a Club, the CAO DE AGUA CLUB, regularly affiliate and recorded, but not recognized ENCI that enumerates partners owners of race and many partners sympathizers.
